Across the East River in Williamsburg, Brooklyn with the Manhattan skyline in the background, WiFi-NY lights up McCarren Park Pool over the air, more than two miles from the East Village

WiFi-NY's Founder Paul Garrin tests the newly installed link on the roof of the poolhouse at the McCarren Park Pool in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, where LiveNation.com and Sensproduction.org stage their series of live rock concerts and interactive dance performances in the dry pool turned eventground. There is no infrastructure at the site -- Time Warner and Verizon could not provide service to the McCarren Pool because they do not have cables run to serve that vicinity, and generators must be brought onsite to provide power for the concerts as well as the wireless.  When the generators go off, so does the WiFi.  This location is ripe for some batteries and solar panels, and some Windside turbines to provide enough clean energy year-round so the noisy, polluting generators can become a thing of the past, and no iffy service from Con Edison required!

WiFi-NY "lit up" in the East Village in September, 2003 shortly after the catasrophic East Coast Blackout on August 14, 2003

WiFi-NY's Founder Paul Garrin holds up a network radio link device, ready to "light up" the WiFi-NY service, just a week after the East Coast power blackout in August, 2003.  The inception of the service was delayed two weeks due to the blackout.  From that point on, PG set out to find alternative means to power the network with renewable sources.
